What is Single Jersey Fabric?
Single jersey is a widely used knit fabric known for its softness, flexibility, and breathability. Originally made from wool, today it is primarily produced from cotton, polyester, viscose, rayon, or blends of these fibers. The fabric was first manufactured on the island of Jersey, located off the coast of France, which is how it got its name.
Widely recognized for its flexibility, single jersey is lightweight, breathable, and perfect for a range of clothing options. It features a smooth, soft texture on the front side with vertical knit loops, while the back has a slightly rougher appearance due to horizontal loops.
Knitting Structure – How is Single Jersey Fabric Made?
Single jersey is produced using a single set of needles on a circular knitting machine. The loops are interlocked in a single direction, creating a one-sided stretch pattern. Because of this structure, the fabric tends to curl at the edges when cut. Compared to interlock or double jersey fabrics, single jersey is lighter and has more elasticity due to its looser knit structure.

Key characteristics of single jersey knitting:
• Front Side: Smooth surface with visible vertical ribs (knit stitches).
• Back Side: More textured, featuring horizontal loops (purl stitches).
• Edge Curling: The fabric naturally curls towards the front side when cut.
• Stretchability: High stretch in width, moderate stretch in length.
Advantages of Single Jersey Fabric
✅ Soft & Comfortable: The smooth front surface makes it very comfortable to wear all day long.
✅ Breathable & Lightweight: With excellent breathability, it’s ideal for summer clothing, keeping you cool and comfortable.
✅ Good Stretchability: Provides a perfect fit without feeling restrictive or uncomfortable.
✅ Excellent Printability: Works well with various printing techniques such as screen printing, sublimation, and digital printing, ensuring clear and long-lasting prints.
✅ Cost-Effective: More affordable than interlock or double-knit fabrics, making it the perfect choice for mass production.
